that option will look in your CSS for background images. if the background images are on the local filesystem and are smaller then 4kb (if i'm not mistaking), they will be read by autoptimize and turned into an inline string, in the CSS. that way there's no HTTP-request for the image any more, as it is there, in the CSS.
